Once all the boys awoke from their respective naps, we ate lunch and then loaded up in the car to head to Redding. We took the boys to Chuck E Cheese to celebrate Elliot's birthday where we ate expensive pizza and bought a ridiculous amount of tokens so the kids could play on the games. Hayden, of course, made a bee line for the Fire Truck and spent 75% of our tokens on it...Elliot was happy to play on anything which required hitting buttons/things. Here are some of the pictures from our afternoon...

After a couple of hours, we left Chuck E Cheese and went to Target where we made the big purchase of Elliot's new car seat! Now that he is 1 he can ride facing forwards; however, it is likely that we will keep him rear facing for a little while yet...but, he can ride rear facing in his swanky new seat!

The Birthday Boy
Shane and I have taken today off to help Elliot celebrate his birthday...right now, they are all celebrating by taking a nap. Yup, the real go-getters!
We started the day off with presents. Elliot scored some great prizes and has had a great time playing with all of them - with a little help from his big brother!
Let's see, what can I tell you about Elliot? He is charismatic, affectionate and slightly obnoxious! We had been worried that Elliot would be the child that played with fire (literally) and had been concerned that he would get too close to the woodstove; however, thankfully, that has not really come to pass. Instead, he has shown great interest in the toilet. Yeah, you read that right. He likes to splash around in it and he likes to throw his toys in it. So, we have had to put a baby gate up to cover the bathroom door.
Elliot tends to be a little more socially outgoing than Hayden and he is much more willing to show PDAs. He is quite the giver of hugs and love bites. He definitely has less patience than Hayden and is not able to sit still...he prefers to eat on the go, thinks books require too much concentration and doesn't understand why one would want to push a train around on a track when demolishing the track is a lot more fun. He does not have a snuggly like Hayden has his blanket; but, he does have 7 pacifiers in his bed at any given time - which he systematically throws out from his bed when he is ready to get up. He gets upset when he wants to go to sleep and has no problems putting himself to sleep. He groans in his sleep while simultaneously rolling all over in his bed. He loves cheese and thinks bananas are tolerable. He chews on his left thumb when he is ready to go to sleep. He loves to pull things off of the shelves and out of draws. He has an amazing visual-spatial awareness. He smiles easily, giggles heartily and hugs willingly. He can sign 'baby' and occasionally 'more'...preferring, instead, a system of grunts and groans to communicate rather than using sign language. He watches his brother carefully and tries to interact with him the best way he knows how - taking his toys and pulling his hair. He is, quite simply, perfect.
Here he is pulling the beautiful ribbons and strings off of his presents:

We May Be Crazy, But...
...the boys are now in the same room. We moved Hayden's crib out of our room and back in to his room where Elliot has been sleeping the past few weeks. Now that Elliot is proving to be a much better sleeper, it seems like a good time to see if we can get away with a joint room.
So, we started with today's nap...it was a success! Yay! So, the big test, of course, is tonight and if they can sleep through the night together. Wish us luck!!
The view from the door - Elliot's bed is on the right and Hayden's is on the left, by the window:

Snow Storm #2!
The second snow storm of this month, started on Thursday evening. By Friday morning, at 3am, we lost our power due to the intensity of the snow. When we woke up on Friday, we were greeted by 14 new inches of snow and still no power. We got 10" more during Friday day and our power returned at 4pm...thankfully!!
Here's Hayden and daddy clearing the path in the back garden on Saturday - OK, daddy is clearing the path, Hayden not so much:

Hayden Can Read!
OK, so it is more like great memorization...but, still it is just as impressive. Here is he reading the start of his book, One Horse Waiting For Me; however, our memory card in the camera got full - so we only get the start of the book. Bummer.
Addendum: So, on the 26th, we managed to catch a snippet of Hayden reading his book to Nana over Skype. It's not the complete book; but, enough where you can get a sense of it!

Our Little Snowman
The day after a crazy amount of snow, and in typical California fashion, we return to bright blue skies! We had to take advantage of this!
We had Hayden's friend, Ella, over to play this morning and we all decided we needed to get some outside time. Hayden refused to join us and chose to stay inside reading his books; so, Elliot and I joined Ella and her parents outside in the snow. It was Elliot's first experience and, overall, he handled it very well.

Snow!
So, after the glorious weather of last month, we now have snow...a lot of snow. It started snowing last night and this is how much snow we had by two o'clock this afternoon - crazy!

Feeding Time
So, Elliot can use a fork! He needs help with the stabbing of the food; but, once he has the fork in his mouth, he is away! Of course, that is if a vulture doesn't circle and steal the fork, and food, before he has a chance!

In The January Sunshine
I have been working most Saturdays...which means that daddy has been left home alone with both kids. Now, I have very fond memories of when my mum worked on Saturdays and dad looked after my brother, sister and myself...so, I am excited that my boys will have the same opportunity with their daddy. Shane has done a great job of stepping up to this new challenge - in the pictures below you will see some of the exciting things they have been getting up to while I am at work!

Memories
Yesterday, when we were at the park, Elliot sat on daddy's lap and pulled off his baseball cap. It reminded me of when Hayden used to do the same; so, I went in the photo archives and found the pictures of Hayden pulling off daddy's baseball cap. Funny enough, the pictures of Hayden were in the 10 month folder - April 2009. So, I thought we could do a 10-month side-by-side comparison of Hayden and Elliot! Enjoy!
After going through all the 10-month pictures of Hayden, I noticed that Hayden did not have his top two teeth, like Elliot does already. Speaking of which, Elliot is already getting more top teeth! It was fun looking at all the ways they are different!

Outdoor Day
A majority of today was spent outside...the weather was sunny and warm - we HAD to take advantage of that!
In the morning we headed out to the house that Shane takes care of. It is in a very small rural community about 15 minutes from our house. When Shane was done with what he needed to do, we all went on a family walk along side Hat Creek. Boone was as happy as anything...especially as he found a lovely deer bone to carry around with him. Elliot was happy as he got to sit on top of daddy's shoulders and continuously pull off daddy's hat. Hayden was happy as he got to show us all the deer tracks and piles of fox poop along the path.
Needless to say, all the boys (yes...Elliot, Hayden, Boone, and daddy) took a long nap when we got back!
When everyone woke up and had eaten their lunches, we headed off to the park to burn off any excess energy. It is the first time that Elliot has been let down to crawl and play where he likes. He had a great time. Hayden actually went down the slide by himself and was very proud of himself. It was a nice hour that we got to spend as a family...something we rarely get to do these days.

10 Months Old
Somehow all the sleepless nights and hectic days have resulted in Elliot becoming 10 months old! It is amazing to think that he is already so close to becoming one. He is so full of life, vibrancy, energy...and mischievousness that we can hardly keep up most days!
To Elliot, the word 'no' is a formality that needs to be crossed before doing what he wants anyway...while demonstrating the "butter wouldn't melt in my mouth" facial expression. Anything that is illicit and off limits, is fair game to Elliot. He is hilarious and charismatic, adventurous and lovably obnoxious.
He has four teeth now and is not afraid of using them. In the disguise of coming in and giving you a kiss, he will clamp down...hard. He is constantly sporting a wet chin and wet shirt from the never-ending amount of drool. He eats at least 4 big meals of mush a day...on top of 16-20oz milk/formula and at least 4oz of water! Shane and I are in trouble when the boys get to teenage years - I am not sure that we will ever be able to keep enough food in the house!
Elliot has not connected with a security blanket; but, he will hunt down a pacifier at any opportunity he can...which only adds to the daily drool level.
Unlike Hayden, Elliot has several nicknames...Spud is the most common (even Hayden calls him this), Grumpy Gums (from before he had teeth, obviously), Eli, Elli-Puddle and the 'monster' (a term of endearment and love!). He does not seem to mind this and just appreciates the attention!
Here is a video of Elliot from today...his 10 month birthday!

Yesterday
Elliot and Hayden are both currently sick. Hayden has a stomach bug and Elliot has a cough/cold. I am just waiting for them to trade viruses so we can keep this joy going for a little longer...!
Yesterday was a quiet day spent in the house. The boys slept, played quietly and Hayden got to watch a couple of movies (a very rare treat for him). We did bundle up in the stroller and go for a walk in the afternoon, just so we could get some fresh air; but, the walk did not last long and it seemed to wear to two boys out.
Yesterday did afford some picture opportunities though. Here are the latest:
Hayden got a magna doodle from his girlfriend, Brooke, for Christmas. He has taken to drawing faces on it as well as writing the letter H (for Hayden!). Here is his latest creation:
Elliot can now pull himself up (sometimes by use of his teeth - literally) and he loves being able to play with the toys that Hayden has been hiding from Elliot on his bed. Poor Hayden, no where is safe now.
Here are those teeth that help Elliot get up on his feet (!)...and the snot and drool that he wipes on Hayden's sheets on his way up:
